Major overhaul underway on Kharkivske Highway: lower asphalt layers installed on over 6 km of road in both directions

As part of the project, a significant amount of engineering work has already been completed, including the construction of a new stormwater drainage system with monolithic stormwater inlets, the installation of 172 street lighting poles, and 300 modern LED fixtures equipped with an automated control system.

Autostrada road crews are working along the entire section of the project — from Darnytska Square to Kharkivska Square. Current works include:

  • milling of worn-out road pavement;
  • reinforcement of the road base and phased installation of asphalt concrete structural layers on new sections;
  • construction of new access roads, sidewalks, and bicycle lanes;
  • installation of cable ducts and modernization of utility networks;
  • installation of traffic light systems;
  • installation of tactile paving for visually impaired pedestrians.

The final asphalt concrete surface layer will be laid during the final stage of the works.

The upgrade of underground pedestrian crossings is also nearing completion. In particular, construction of the elevator shaft near the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry has been completed. Currently, crews are finishing granite wall cladding, renovating entrance areas, raising parapets, and repairing technical rooms in all underground crossings.

Kharkivske Highway plays a vital role in the transport system of Kyiv’s left bank, providing daily connections between densely populated districts and key city highways. Due to constant heavy traffic, including large freight vehicles, both the road surface and the structural base of the highway have experienced significant wear and deterioration.

For this reason, the highway is undergoing a major overhaul involving the full reconstruction of the road structure. The works include removal of the old pavement, strengthening of the road base, and installation of a new multilayer asphalt concrete system designed to withstand increased loads and ensure a longer service life.

The need for comprehensive reconstruction was confirmed by the technical condition of several road sections, where deep ruts, cracks, and subsidence indicated a loss of structural integrity in the road foundation. The capital repair will improve traffic safety, driving comfort, and the reliability of one of the city’s most important transport arteries.
