Transport Infrastructure Modernization Continues on Kharkivske Highway

Currently, more than 7 km of asphalt concrete pavement has been laid in both directions of traffic. (The final wearing course will be placed immediately before the road is opened to traffic.) Access roads along the entire project section—from Darnytska Square to Kharkivska Square—have also been asphalted.

Key works currently underway include:

  • strengthening the road base and constructing a new pavement structure;
  • building side roads, sidewalks (more than 1.7 km completed), and cycling infrastructure (over 2.2 km completed);
  • upgrading underground utilities and cable networks;
  • installing new traffic signal systems (5 of 14 intersections completed);
  • constructing modern public transport stops;
  • creating a fully accessible environment for people with reduced mobility.

Alongside the roadway reconstruction, a comprehensive package of supporting infrastructure works is also being implemented. A modern stormwater drainage system has already been installed, while construction of a new street lighting network is ongoing. The system will include 843 energy-efficient LED luminaires and an automated lighting control system.

Special attention is also being given to the modernization of underground pedestrian crossings. Interior finishing works are currently in progress, including cladding entrance areas with porcelain stoneware tiles and renovating technical facilities in all five underpasses.

To improve accessibility, ramps are being installed at the Yaroslava Hasheka Street and Prazka Street public transport stops.

At the Institute of Chemistry stop (even-numbered side), construction of the elevator shaft has been completed. On the opposite side of the road, construction of a second elevator shaft is underway, including the relocation and reconstruction of underground utility networks.

Kharkivske Highway is one of the busiest transport corridors on Kyiv's Left Bank. Decades of intensive traffic, including heavy freight vehicles, have significantly deteriorated both the pavement and its structural foundation. For this reason, the project goes far beyond routine repairs. It involves a complete reconstruction of the roadway—from rebuilding the foundation to installing a new multi-layer pavement structure designed to withstand modern traffic loads.

Upon completion, Kyiv will gain not only a fully renewed arterial road but also a safer, more comfortable, accessible, and technologically advanced urban space for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists alike.
