The cyclone puts Ukraine’s roads to the test: Autostrada crews operate 24/7

A powerful cyclone has swept across Ukraine, turning roads into a zone of constant challenge — heavy rain, blizzards, ice, gusty winds and snowdrifts. Weather conditions change within hours: rain turns into snow, temperatures drop rapidly, and the road surface freezes almost instantly. In such conditions traffic can stop within minutes, so road crews work continuously.

Autostrada maintenance teams ensure uninterrupted traffic nationwide around the clock. In total, the company maintains 7,660 km of national and local roads, including international highways M-01 (Kyiv–Chernihiv), M-02 (Kipti–Hlukhiv–Bachivsk), M-03 (Kyiv–Kharkiv), M-06 (Kyiv–Chop), M-07 (Kyiv–Kovel–Yahodyn), M-21 (Vystupovychi–Zhytomyr–Mohyliv-Podilskyi), as well as national routes N-16 (Zolotonosha–Cherkasy–Smila–Uman) and N-08 (Boryspil–Dnipro–Zaporizhzhia–Mariupol), together with regional and territorial roads. In Kharkiv region, work is carried out on key evacuation routes.

A total of 350 workers and 280 specialized vehicles are deployed. Crews clear carriageways, shoulders, bridges and interchanges and apply anti-icing materials. Over the past 24 hours alone, more than 3,800 tonnes of sand-salt mixture and 120 tonnes of technical salt have been used.

The most difficult conditions are currently on the Kyiv–Chop highway in Rivne region. Due to numerous ascents and descents, traffic here is especially sensitive to weather: strong crosswinds create snowdrifts on open sections, while rain turning into snow followed by freezing significantly complicates equipment operation, requiring repeated treatment of some sections.

We operate in constant coordination with the State Emergency Service and the National Police to maintain continuous traffic flow, critical infrastructure operations and freight transportation.

While the severe weather continues, our crews remain on duty around the clock.
