Restoring Kharkivske Highway in Kyiv

Autostrada continues the major reconstruction of Kharkivske Highway — one of the key transport arteries on the left bank of Kyiv, passing through densely populated districts of the capital: Sotsmisto, Old and New Darnytsia, and the Kharkivskyi residential area.
As a result of the project, Kharkivske Highway will be upgraded to the level of a modern, safe, and high-quality urban roadway that meets the standards of convenience, inclusiveness, and long-term reliable operation for Kyiv residents.
Years of intensive traffic have caused severe structural damage to Kharkivske Highway: rutting, numerous cracks, and significant subsidence, indicating deterioration not only of the surface but also of the road base. A key parameter that determines the ability of the road structure to withstand loads — the minimum design modulus of elasticity — must be 468 MPa. On many sections of Kharkivske Highway, this indicator does not reach even 200 MPa. Without strengthening the base, the deformations will reappear and the road will quickly lose its evenness. Therefore, the project provides for a full-scale reconstruction: milling of the old pavement, replacement of the base, installation of a leveling layer of cement-treated crushed stone mix, and application of a modern three-layer asphalt concrete pavement, ensuring greater durability and strength.
The project covers 5.4 km of roadway and is being implemented entirely by Autostrada’s own resources.
Key improvements after reconstruction:
-
expansion to three lanes in each direction, with the outer right lanes designated for public transport;
-
modernization of intersections and traffic lights, including additional turn-left storage lanes;
-
comprehensive renewal of sidewalks, local access roads, and the installation of modern public transport stops, parking areas, and bicycle lanes;
-
upgraded and improved street lighting: installation of energy-efficient LED fixtures and implementation of a modern control system capable of adjusting brightness or partially switching lights off depending on the time of day;
-
full reconstruction of pedestrian underpasses, including new stairways, ramps, and canopies;
-
installation of elevators in the underpass near the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine;
-
lowered curbs and tactile paving to ensure accessibility.
Autostrada road crews are installing new pavement layers, laying granite curbstones, building sidewalks and bicycle lanes, and installing new lighting poles. Currently, works are underway on a 3.1 km section — from Kharkivska Square to Yurii Lytvynskyi Street (odd-numbered side). Before laying new asphalt, new sewer collectors and stormwater inlets and manholes are being constructed.
Autostrada bridge engineers have begun preparatory works for the installation of elevators in the pedestrian underpass near the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. A sheet-pile wall has already been installed and the excavation completed. Monolithic works for constructing the elevator shaft and new concrete stairways on the odd side — next to the Mega City residential complex — are now starting.
A total of 100 units of specialized machinery and more than 200 Autostrada employees are involved in the project.
Weather permitting, we aim to complete the asphalt paving of Kharkivske Highway by the end of this year, and the full scope of work — in the first quarter of 2026.
