Kyiv Metro to Vynohradar: Installing Equipment for the New “Viktoriia” Tunnel Boring Machine

More than 70% of the new equipment for the tunnel boring machine (TBM) has already been delivered to the construction site. Several key components and systems have been installed, including the operator control console, gearboxes, belt conveyor, service platforms, power transformer, electrical cabinets, pumps, cutterhead drive motors, cooling system, and hydraulic oil tank.
The new equipment was manufactured in Germany by Herrenknecht. The TBM’s advanced technological systems are particularly important for tunnelling in Kyiv’s challenging geotechnical conditions. Water-saturated soils require highly precise and reliable equipment, as well as continuous monitoring of tunnelling parameters to maintain ground stability and ensure the safety of underground operations.
Once assembly is complete, the Viktoriia TBM will begin mechanised excavation of the left-hand running tunnel between Syrets and Mostytska metro stations.
Autostrada specialists recently returned from France, where they completed specialised training at the Techni-Metal Systèmes tunnelling equipment manufacturing facility, part of the Herrenknecht Group. They also conducted technical inspections of new multi-service vehicles for the TBM. These specialised self-propelled vehicles are designed to transport precast concrete tunnel lining segments, construction materials, and equipment directly to the tunnel boring machine.
Tunnelling operations will begin once assembly and the necessary testing and commissioning procedures have been completed. Work will be carried out around the clock by a team of more than 100 specialists, including TBM operators, segment erector crews, mine surveyors, and support personnel. The team brings many years of hands-on experience in metro construction and has undergone additional specialised training in operating the new tunnelling equipment.
What happened to the “Halyna” TBM?
A technical condition assessment of the Halyna tunnel boring machine, which Autostrada acquired from its previous owners, revealed that almost 99% of its equipment was no longer suitable for further use. The assessment was conducted by specialists from the German company Herrenknecht. Due to the absence of essential components, automation systems, electrical equipment, and hydraulic systems, restoring the machine through repairs was not feasible.
It was therefore decided to purchase a new tunnel boring machine equipped with state-of-the-art technology. Total investment in the Viktoriia TBM has exceeded €15 million.
