Construction of Rivne’s Northern Bypass: Modern Quality Control Technologies by Autostrada

Autostrada is building the northern bypass of Rivne – a road that will connect highways H-25 and T-18-32, significantly reducing transit traffic through the city. This section is crucial for improving connections between Kyiv, Lutsk, and border checkpoints with Poland.

The project began in 2019, but was suspended due to the full-scale invasion. For three years, the section remained without proper maintenance and now requires a thorough condition assessment before large-scale construction resumes.

Currently, earthworks and surveying are underway at the site, alongside operations of Autostrada’s mobile road laboratory, which is conducting a technical audit of the pavement.

The goal is to identify all defects, adjust engineering solutions if necessary, and ensure high-quality implementation of the next construction stages.

The laboratory team carries out the following tasks:
✅ Scanning the road surface to detect defects left after previous works;
✅ Assessing pavement evenness, which directly impacts traffic safety, using a laser profilometer that scans the surface in 19 points simultaneously with a capture width of 4.5 meters. Measurements are carried out according to the International Roughness Index (IRI);
✅ Measuring pavement friction based on the International Friction Index (IFI);
✅ Performing static load tests to assess the bearing capacity and durability of the pavement structure, as well as its strength and deformation characteristics.

Autostrada’s mobile laboratories are equipped with high-precision instruments that enable a full cycle of testing – from soil compaction control to the analysis of asphalt mixtures and pavement layers. This technology allows not only timely evaluation of newly constructed surfaces but also real-time detection of defects at traffic speeds.

The introduction of modern quality control technologies is one of Autostrada’s core principles, ensuring that every project meets the highest standards of safety, reliability, and durability.
